We spoke to Immerso Hotel to get the low-down on this stunning hotel …

You’re located in Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve – what is this?
This is a program that proactively identifies, designates and enshrines international waves, surf zones and surrounding environments, protecting them from the threat of development.

What are your closest surf spots and what level do they suit?
There are waves for all levels of surfers, from beginners to professionals. Ribeira d’Ilhas is famed for hosting multiple national and international surfing competitions and here are the most popular waves in the in the Reserve. Half an hour from us in Peniche you can find the famous Supertubos beach plus plenty of good surf spots at Lisbon and Sintra as well.

Can you hire surf equipment and book lessons through the hotel?
Yes, at Immerso we can book lessons and rent equipment through our partners Tiago Pires Surf School. Tiago Pires was the first Portuguese surfer to join the WCT and he is considered one of the country’s best surfers.

What’s the inspiration for the architectural design?
The unique spaces were created with nature in mind and use textures inspired by the land and the sea to represent the relationship with the ocean and the valley where the hotel is located.

What are the rooms like?
Inside, there’s a balance between comfort and simplicity, always with nature as inspiration. The vaulted ceiling is a tribute to the waves of Ericeira and the bed as the centrepiece of the bedroom facing the valley and beach. The rooms have a bathroom, a living area and a balcony.

Away from the surf, what is on offer at the hotel to do?
At Immerso you can go for walks and jogs in nature, enjoy wine tasting, picnics and we also recommend visiting Mafra to see the tapada de Mafra or the palace of Mafra.

What are the sustainable and environmental practises in place at the hotel?
From day one, we made a commitment to sustainability practices to create experiences with a positive impact on people and the planet. The energy efficient architectural design by Tiago Silva Dias, represents a balance between natural values and construction. For the interior, most of the pieces are designed in Portugal and made by producers that we know personally, to support local industry.

Outside the organic garden allows us to cultivate many of the ingredients that we then serve at our table and across the grounds we use native plants to help with the regeneration of the soil.

Sustainability applies to every decision made. From reducing water consumption and the use of disposable plastic to our green transport and selecting our partners based on their proximity, range of certified products and the sustainable practices that they follow.

We are currently starting the photovoltaic project to make the building more autonomous and although we have the capacity to use rainwater, we are also starting the process to have a water hole (well).
