There's a peak swell landing somewhere on this map every month of the year. Here's where's on when.
There's no bad month to book. The Caribbean pair peak through the northern winter, when Atlantic groundswells light up the reefs of the Dominican Republic and Barbados. As they soften and trade winds blow out the waves, the Pacific trio take over for the summer, with El Salvador and Nicaragua running offshore almost daily and Costa Rica firing right through spring and summer. November to April are also some of our favourite times to hit Latin America – with smaller swells, sunny weather and tropical water temps.

Palm trees, warm-water reefs and sunrise sessions before the trade winds ruffle the lineup – the Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's most consistent surf escapes. The Amber Coast in the north hoovers up the north-easterly swells, serving up a playful mix of mellow peelers, punchier reef breaks and cruisy walls for every level of surfer.
Playa Encuentro near Cabarete is the hub – a windsurf mecca in summer, but come winter offshores groom the lineup. Set your alarm for early mornings with strong coffee and glassy peaks before the winds build. Then afternoons are for drifting between beach bars, bachata music and strolls along Cabarete's colourful shoreline.
November to April offers the best run of swell and cleaner offshore mornings. Base yourself close to Playa Encuentro – El Encuentro Surf Lodge offers design-led rooms, surf lessons and hire, yoga, a pool and easy walking access to the beach.

The teardrop-shaped island of Barbados sits 100 miles east of its nearest neighbours – perfectly placed to catch long-period Atlantic swells, and ringed by coral reef that turns every pulse into something rideable.
Soup Bowl at Bathsheba is the headline act – a growling barrel with Kelly Slater among its fans. But there's plenty more for every level of surfer: from mellow beach breaks and rolling points down south, to wilder, jungle-fringed reefs up north.
Between sessions, days drift between sea-glass hunting, rotis stuffed with saltfish, rum punch at sunset, and live music spilling onto the shoreline at Oistins. Hire a car, chase the swell around the island and settle into the easy Bajan rhythm.
November to June offers the most consistent surf, with the cleanest conditions from October to March. Base yourself around Bathsheba or Surfer's Bay for easy access to the island's best waves.

The 'land of the rights', El Salvador's Pacific coastline is a conveyor belt of cobblestone point breaks, where long righthanders peel in with mechanical precision beneath volcanoes rising into bright blue skies.
World-class Punta Roca is now on the WSL Championship Tour, while nearby El Sunzal hosts a series of international longboard events. Both are worth surfing – but the real magic lies beyond the crowds.
El Zonte's got it all: the laidback surf-town vibe, boutique stays, beach bars and a righthand point that works across a range of swells. Further east, Las Flores offers thigh-burning rights – soft on smaller days and fast, barrelling sections when the Pacific starts to pulse.
Between sessions, refuel on pupusas stuffed with cheese and beans, leap into waterfalls inland, hike up volcanoes and ride horses along black-sand beaches while Latino fiesta music drifts from the shoreline.

Boardies, bikinis and the best sessions at day break. Flanked by Central America's largest lake and the Pacific, Nicaragua picks up swell rolling in from the Roaring Forties and gets offshore winds over 300 days a year. The result: wave-rich coastline, wind-shaped perfection and very few crowds.
Once over-shadowed by the more polished Costa Rica to the south, Nicaragua has quietly carved out its own identity – a wilder, more stripped-back surf escape built around boutique eco-lodges, all-inclusive surf camps and uncrowded breaks. Waves range from hollow beach breaks and punchy reefs for advanced surfers to gentler sandy bays for beginners – and with water temperatures around 28°C, a rashie is the most you'll ever need.
The vibe is pure, unfussy Central America: fresh coconuts after surf, cold Toñas at sunset and dusty roads leading to palm-lined peaks.
November to April brings dry, sunny conditions and smaller to mid-sized swells. May to October delivers bigger, more consistent surf, with rain usually falling overnight and clean mornings still common. Base yourself around Gigante or Popoyo for the most consistent waves and easy access to point breaks, reefs and beach setups.

Costa Rica has it all – jungle-backed beaches, waves for every level, luxury eco resorts, and wildlife that will stop you in your tracks: monkeys in the canopies, iguanas on the rooftops, humpback whales just offshore.
The North Pacific is the surfing heartland, with Tamarindo, Nosara and Santa Teresa delivering consistent beach breaks and points in a setting that's easy, safe and family-friendly. Days flow between dawn patrols and jungle shade, with yoga on the sand, tropical fruit breakfasts and long afternoons in the hammock before sunset sessions.

December to February brings smaller swells and sunshine. March to May offers more consistent surf with dry, clean conditions. May to August is wetter, but often delivers excellent waves with rain mostly overnight.
