Wetsuit Buying Tips
With so many styles and brands available, choosing the right wetsuit can feel overwhelming. Here are key factors to consider before making your purchase:
1. Fit is everything. Your wetsuit should fit snugly without restricting movement. A poorly fitting wetsuit – whether too tight or too loose – will reduce warmth and flexibility. Always try before you buy, and don’t be afraid to test different sizes or brands for the best fit.
2. Choose the right thickness for the water temperature.
• Spring (cool water, around 12-16C) – A 4/3mm wetsuit is ideal for early spring when water temperatures are still chilly.
• Late Spring/Summer (mild to warm water, around 16-20C) – A 3/2mm wetsuit provides warmth while keeping you flexible.
• Peak Summer (warm water, 20C+) – On hot days and in warm water a 1-2mm shorty or surf suit is the go.
3. Seam construction matters. Well-sealed seams help prevent water entry and improve durability. Look for blind-stitched, glued and taped seams for maximum warmth and longevity.
4. Zipper styles affect comfort and performance.
• Back-zip wetsuits – Easy to put on and take off, but can allow more water flushing.
• Chest-zip wetsuits – Better insulation and flexibility, though slightly trickier to get into, but you get used to it pretty quickly if you’ve not worn one before.
• Zip-free wetsuits – Maximum stretch and comfort, but require extra effort when getting in and out.
5. Buy from trusted brands – Quality wetsuits last longer and perform better. Research customer reviews and feedback to ensure you’re investing in a reputable brand known for durability, innovation, and performance.
6. Try it on when possible – Comfort is key, so if you’re unsure, get advice from friends, experienced surfers, or shop assistants. A well-fitting wetsuit will enhance your time in the water.
