Recently The Wave played host to the Reef x Heads Above The Waves Surf Experience, which was organised as part of their collaborative ‘blue health’ campaign, encouraging people to spend time in and around water to improve their mental wellbeing.
Hosted by Global Reef Ambassador, Mike Lay, and photographer, Evie Johnstone, the event saw sixteen young people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences come together and take to the water for their very first surf lesson.
Each attendee was greeted with a limited edition ‘blue health’ tote bag and t-shirt, as well as a fresh pair of Reef sandals before getting suited and booted ready to hit the water. The t-shirts and totes are available to buy online from Reef UK, Heads Above The Waves and 10Over Surf, with 50% of profits being donated directly to the charity.
Travelling from across the UK and ranging in ages from 11 to 23, the group spent the morning perfecting their pop-ups before sliding and gliding their way through the surf. There were thrills, spills and plenty of smiles, with a stoked Mike Lay throwing in shouts of encouragement and ‘shakas’ with every ride.
“Blue health for me is a really important aspect of my own mental health and I think it can be for so many others. It’s not accessible for everyone and so events like this one are just so important to break down those barriers and let people have those first-hand experiences. Seeing people who’ve never surfed before catch that first wave and have that sense of achievement of getting to their feet is just magical!” said Mike.
Abdi Ali, 19, from Bristol and part of the youth empowerment programme at Babassa said “That moment when I was on the board just gave me the ultimate sense of focus and calm. Everything can be so hectic around you, but when you’re focusing on popping up and riding the wave there’s that complete moment of silence and it’s just you and the water.”
Lucy Walker, 20, said “Honestly, for me it felt like flying. Gliding across the wave when you finally stand up, the happiness you feel is incredible. I’d say for anyone that’s never tried it, definitely give it a go!”
After a couple of hours immersing themselves in one of the most unique blue spaces in the UK, the team retreated inside for a refuel, with post-surf pizzas offering the opportunity to regroup on their shared in-water experiences.
Si Martin, Founder of Heads Above The Waves “This has been such an important campaign for us because it’s been a reminder about the benefits of using the water for mental wellbeing. Having it culminate in an event like this where it offers a level playing field and everyone is able to learn together is perfect.”
New friends were made, experiences enjoyed and the ultimate wellbeing boost from time in the water was had, with the post-surf smiles speaking for themselves!
