JoycieJules was started by surfing couple Udane a photographer from Northern Spain and her boyfriend Nathan from Australia. We caught up with the creative couple to see how their new venture came about.
Udane, tell us about yourself and where you’re both from?
I grew up on the pristine beaches of Northern Spain where I cultivated a love for the beach and all things to do with summer. Nathan, is an Australian builder, who travelled the world trying to find the perfect wave. He grew up on the Gold Coast, Australia, and developed an intrinsic love for the sea. Nathan and I met on a beach in Southern France and the rest is history.
What’s it like where you live?
We have the best of both worlds living half of the year in the Basque Country (Spain) and the other half in Australia. We enjoy an endless summer travelling between the both.
Do you surf or live near the sea?
Surfing and living near the beach is a tradition in our families passed down to us through the generations. The name of our company JoycieJules – is after our grandmothers. Nathan’s grandmother Joyce (Joycie), was a beach babe in the 1930s and spent many blissful days at Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Beach in Coolangatta. And I have many special memories of my grandmother Julia (Jules), who spent countless beautiful days sitting on the beach in Mundaka (Spain). Our company is more than a name to us, it is a tribute to our two grandmothers who we love dearly.
How did you come up with the idea of setting up your own company?
Because of our love for the ocean we wanted to develop a product that would draw people to the ‘sun, surf and sand.’ We fell in the love with the idea of a round towel and believed it would be something that other people would also appreciate and enjoy.
How does the ocean inspire your designs?
Both the designs and colour palettes of our towels are borrowed from the sea. We wanted to draw on the vibrant colours of reefs, sea plants, sunsets and sunrises. We believe that the ocean stirs the heart and inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.
