The final countdown to the Boardmasters is on. Time to pack your tents* and festival gubbins and think about heading to the coast for five phenomenal days of fun.
The music side of things you’ll know already, as we’ve been banging on about the epic line-up for a good few issues now, but with headliners like Alt-J, Jamiroquai and Two Door Cinema Club what’s not to love? There’s heaps of other good gravy across the festival and we’re particularly looking forward to seeing The Flaming Lips, Slaves, Wild Beasts, Stormzy, DJ Shadow, Formation and Carve alumni Mickey Smith’s new outfit – A Blaze of Feather. It’s one of the best festivals of the season so we’re all understandably frothing. The music bridges Fistral and Watergate and of course continues with the after parties.
On the surfing side the welcome return of the WSL sees shortboard and longboard world tour contests. The highly anticipated Boardmasters QS1000 and LQS1000 events will run from Wednesday 9 until Sunday 13 August, featuring a brace of internationals and home favourites like Lucy Campbell in the Women’s, perennial Boardmasters hero Ben Skinner, and ubergrom Stanley Norman who debuts as the youngest ever Boardmasters Men’s Open competitor at 13-years old. But he can’t claim youngest overall as Sky Brown takes Stan’s 13 and drops an 8-years old in the Women’s Open! And don’t miss out on the signing sessions at Fistral Surf Village, including Lucy Campbell, Ben Skinner and Luke Dillon, with more pro surfers to be announced. Basically, it’s the place to be until music time, and with Beach Sessions, Boardmasters Music Festival and After Parties, there’s something for everyone.
This year the #ROXYFITNESS movement is also coming to Boardmasters, where you can join them for female-only morning yoga sessions at Watergate Bay, overlooking the beautiful Cornish coastline. So bring an array of colour to your morning by grabbing your brightest yoga wear, your closest friends and get ready to channel your inner yogi with a taster session held by some of Roxy’s inspiring ambassadors. The yoga lessons are free but you’ll need to book up in advance for this at the Boardmasters website. For all the info about yoga and the Wellbeing Area at Watergate click here.
For last minute tickets hit up www.boardmasters.co.uk, but don’t leave it to late as last year sold out on some nights. There’s nothing worse than missing out on one of the best events of the summer!
*Please ensure you take your tent and everything you bring home with you. Festivals are dependant on the goodwill of landowners and local authorities, so leave no trace and keep Cornwall pristine.

The Underworld is a time trip through tunnels to long lost iconic clubs and the legendary parties that took place within their walls. Journey back to a representation of The Blind Pig, a hard-bop prohibition era boogie-woogie club from 1930s Detroit or head to the classic Bristolian 60s Bamboo Club for the best in reggae and dub. There’s no better place for fans of disco than Coney Island, inspired by the infamous venue in 1970s New York and for revellers who prefer hip hop, funk, post punk and early rap there’s 1520 Sedgwick Ave, a nod to the legendary 1970s building in The Bronx where these genres came to life.
Each venue will host an eclectic mix of performers. From The Ivy Drip and The Lillettes in The Blind Pig, to The Downbeat Melody Soundsystem in the Bamboo Club to Ere Wax and Russian Kay in Coney Island and 45 Live, a collective of DJs from across Europe and the USA in 1520 Sedgwick Ave. High demand is to be expected as the sounds of the revolution resonate all night long. The Underworld Experience, located in The Land of Saints area at Watergate Bay, will be produced by The Masked Ball’s Alec Short and Kelvin Batt. It will open from 4pm until 1am each night, apart from Sunday when the area will open at the earlier time of 3pm for The Alternative Sunday Service hosted by Reverend Michael Alabama Jackson and The Hail Mary’s.
Inspired by the freedom, adventure and creativity of surfing and music, Boardmasters was born in 1981. Expect parties that run late into the night and a beautiful beach to recuperate on during the day. The 5-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year the grassroots surf and music festival welcomed over 150,000 festival goers to sunny Cornwall. Book your tickets now!
