Roxy's RUNSUPYOGA beach run

On Saturday 25th July, Fistral Bay, Newquay saw 200 women take part in Roxy’s global tour #RUNSUPYOGA in celebration of its 25th Anniversary.

The Roxy #RUNSUPYOGA commenced at 10am with 140 women taking part in a beach yoga session, taught by Roxy ambassador and surf yoga instructor, Lucy Foster-Perkins. This was followed by competitors partaking in a 1.5km SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) race, led by Roxy’s Natalie Fox and held in timed heats of 10 per a group. Girls had to battle the strong current and waves to reach the Roxy buoy, whilst safety boats were on hand. Finally the 3km beach run at 4pm saw 80 girls united in a fast run across the sandy route whilst Fistral beach’s spectators cheered on.

The day was rounded off with a prize giving for the winner of the SUP race, who was Lena Hannan, aged 28, from Cornwall winning a Roxy SUP board from Ann’s Cottage. Rachel Stringer from east London won the Roxy beach run, winning a £500 voucher for Ann’s Cottage. Roxy ambassadors, competitors and spectators headed to the Fistral Beach Bar to continue 25th Anniversary celebrations with live music.

To mark 25 years of being the most inspiring women’s fashion and performance brand, on and off the board, Roxy launched the #RUNSUPYOGA challenge in Barcelona in May 2015. Since then, women in Hawaii, Germany, France, Netherlands and Belgium have joined in the celebrations, with more events planned for Australia and California later in the year. The UK #RUNSUPYOGA event united hundreds of women from all over the country, bringing them to Newquay, the surf capital of the UK, all in the name of sport and surf culture.

Edward Martin, Marketing Manager for Roxy UK said, “Roxy has grown up, from the brand these women knew as teenagers, into a feminine, functional and completely unique way of celebrating boardsports and fitness culture. With a strong backing from the Roxy athletes and ambassadors, #RUNSUPYOGA was a brilliant celebration of women, the outdoors and the last 25 years.”

Roxy ambassador Lucy Foster-Perkins said, “It was amazing to bring together so many active, adventurous and strong women.  It was such a unique opportunity to meet other women who share the same drive and passion to be outside, on the beach and in the water. I’ve come away from the weekend with new friends, fresh inspiration and wishing the weekend wouldn’t end!”

SurfGirl designer Chelsea Holter said, “It was really great to see such a good turnout of girls not only locally but from right across the UK, smiles all day, it was great to see. Considering the conditions of the water all the girls made an amazing effort to get out there in the SUP session and challenge themselves. The sun was beaming down all day, finished off with a sunset view from the Fistral Beach Bar with a delicious cider! Happy days!”

SurfGirl interviewed some of the girls, here’s what they said…

Elle from Wales: “The best thing about today was the level of support and encouragement from the Roxy team and the participants too. Just in the run people cheering us on, it all really helped, the guys in the water like lifeguards, they where so helpful and all in all has made the day so good. Being a free event too is pretty awesome! We travelled down for the event and making a bit of a weekend of it, so its been really good.”

Laura from Newquay: “Best part of my day..everything has been really great, the yoga, run, SUP was a challenge, but all really fun and an amazing atmosphere!”

Lucy from Newquay: “The yoga was amazing, I don’t do it very often but when I do I really enjoy it. The run was really fun, a little tough and relentless on the sand for the three laps but it was good fun. The SUP event again relentless because of the conditions out there today but it was really fun, and just be part of it all and to have such an amazing day. I am tired now but feeling really good, ready to wind down with a cider.”
