Mermaids, mermen, sea creatures and seafaring folk of all kinds will once again be invading the shores of Hove and Brighton seafront this July, to take part in a colourful cavalcade in celebration of our seas and sealife. The aim of the parade is to help raise awareness of marine conservation issues and this year the event is in collaboration with Brighton based organisation, WhaleFest. All profit made on the day will be donated to the World Cetacean Alliance.
March of the Mermaids was founded in 2011 by organiser Hannah Chilton, 27 from Brighton, inspired by a life-long obsession with mermaids and a passion for the sea. Hannah’s main inspiration to create the event came from years of following the famous Coney Island Mermaid Parade which takes place every year in Brooklyn, New York.
The meeting point for the parade is on Hove Lawns at 12pm (next to the Peace Statue). The parade commences at 2pm and ends approx. 4pm at our after-party venue, Bar Azure (on the lower promenade after the pier). Leading the way for the march on the day will be Compere Mermaid with a megaphone, actress/performer Honour Mission.
At our after-party there will be music, real mermaids, and the crowning of our Queen Mermaid and King Prawn.The event is a family friendly day for all ages to take part in
This year the march will be followed by a further ‘Fin-ale’ party at The Tempest Inn from 9pm.
