Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale will be the official beer for the main 2015 UKPST programme and the announcement has been made ahead of the biggest surfing contest in Europe – the English National Surfing Championships – taking place this coming weekend (2nd & 3rd May) at Watergate Bay in Cornwall.

The UKPST exists to raise the profile of British surfing across the UK, highlighting the quality of surf conditions and locations across the country, providing support and financial reward for surfers, showcasing their outstanding surfing skills and style whilst also pushing the performance level of British surfing overall. Sharp’s is the multi-award winning Rock-based brewery, known for its adventurous attitude and commitment to Cornish sports so it was a natural opportunity for Sharp’s to partner with the pro organisation and its contests.
A pivotal event in the UK surfing calendar, which opens the competitive surfing season, the English National Surfing Championships is also the UK’s longest running surf competition.  With over 200 expected entrants, hot tipped surfers for the extensive set of titles include Newquay-based Luke Dillon, current UKPST woman’s champion Lucy Campbell, local favourite Alan Stokes, international star Russell Winter, new talent Jobe Harriss and current English women’s champion Emilie Currie. The highest ranking surfers from each division will be selected to represent the English team at the European Surfing Championships in September 2015 in Morocco.

This internationally significant event is organised by the English Surfing Federation (ESF) and students from Cornwall College’s Surf Science and Technology course and is the first stop on the UK Pro Surf Tour circuit.

It’s a very exciting year and one that will raise the professional ‘bar’ for UK surf competitions and recognition of our nations’ competitors. This year’s event includes a black tie fundraising launch party at the Carnmarth Hotel aiming to raise money for the English Surfing Team so they have the required funds for the European tour.

Dave Reed, Director of UK Surf Promotions said:  “We are totally excited to announce this North Cornish coast power partnership between our iconic brands.  Sharp’s Brewery is synonymous with adventure and energy and this Atlantic Pale Ale partnership is the perfect fit for us, enabling us to boost the tour right across the country.  We’re very much looking forward to kicking this sponsorship off with the Open and Seniors categories of the English Nationals and it’s great to have Sharp’s on board for this and the majority of our future 2015 contests.”

James Nicholls, Senior Brand Manager at Sharp’s Brewery said: “Being a Cornish brewer brewing on the Atlantic coast, and with many of us being surfers ourselves, we’re really proud to deepen our commitment to UK surfing with the UK Pro Surf tour. We’re looking forward to following the tour across the country and offering people the chance to get involved with our ‘Adventure Brewing’ campaign along the way.  The forecast for the English National Surf Championships is shaping up with swell on the way so we’re looking forward to getting out there at the weekend, watching the very best English surfers battle it out and rewarding those of the right age with a drop of one of the South West’s fastest growing beer brands.”
