Portugal is one of Europe’s main swell magnets with an amazing diversity of waves – from the big-wave scene at Nazaré, to the two wave-loaded coastlines of the Algarve via the freakish beach break of Supertubos and the world-class points of Ericeira. Here’s our guide to surfing in Portugal:

With year-round sunshine, delicious local food, relaxed vibes, plenty of culture and friendly folk, Portugal is a dream trip. Whether you’re a first-time visitor, or want to get it even more dialled for your next adventure, we’ve put together some FAQs so you can get prepped with everything you need to plan your next trip:

How do I get there?
There are a few key airports in Portugal. If you’re headed north, fly to Porto, to the south, Faro, or in the middle, Lisbon. It’s pretty cheap to hire a car, which is the easiest way to chase the swell and make the most out of your surf trip. Public transport is also super cheap and efficient, and there are great bus and train connections throughout the country. If you’re staying at a surf camp, most of them will arrange transfers so that everything is sorted for you!

When should I go surfing in Portugal?
For more experienced surfers the best time is September to April. June to September brings smaller waves, so is perfect for beginner surfers!

Is it safe to travel as a solo female in Portugal?
Yes! Portugal is considered one of the safest countries in Europe for solo female travellers (according to the Global Peace Index). The surf communities are welcoming, and local people are generally friendly and helpful. As with any destination, make sure you stick to well-lit areas at night, trust your instincts, and be mindful of your belongings.

What’s the vibe like for female surfers in Portugal?
Portugal has an ever-growing community of female surfers, and the lineup is generally friendly (if a little competitive). At more crowded spots, make sure to respect surf etiquette and local surfers. If you’re new to a break, take time to observe before paddling out.

Can I surf in my swimsuit?
While Portugal has a warm climate, the chilly Canaries current keeps the water cool, meaning a 3/2mm wettie is standard uniform throughout the year. But make sure you still pack your bikinis, as the sun will be shining for those post-surf beach days!

What is the food like?
When you are surfing in Portugal the food is always a highlight. Portuguese seafood is famous and there are many local restaurants worth seeking out to get a traditional experience, with fresh catches like sardines, bacalhau (salted cod), and clams. If you can’t choose, go for a series of petiscos (small plates). And of course, you have to try a pastel de nata. Portugal’s cuisine is so diverse and fresh that you won’t struggle to find something you love! They’ve really seen a boom in plant-based eating in the last few years as well, so veggie and vegan food is super easy to find!

Where should I stay?
We’ve put together a guide to our favourite surf camps across Portugal, each offering a unique experience tailored to different skill levels and preferences. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a laid-back environment with expert coaching, or an experienced surfer chasing the perfect wave, there’s something for everyone. These camps offer amazing accommodation, delicious local food, and the experience of a surfing community. Whether you’re after a social surf camp experience or a more secluded retreat, these locations are the perfect base for your Portuguese surf adventure.
