A new bio movie details the journey of Rip Curl surfer, “Oney Anwar”, and his journey from an unassuming kid to being the great hope of Indonesian surfing. Producer, Karen Donald, has approached the film from the perspective of a non-surfer, which has helped to give “Oney Anwar – Chasing the Dream” the sort of depth and insight rarely seen in the surf movie genre – hoping to reach beyond the surfing community to a wider audience with this heart warming and inspirational story.
Karen, who is from Hertfordshire, spent the last four years living and surfing in Bali – working on the independent film about Anwar. She explains, “I relocated to Bali to be fully immersed in this culture and it was a lifestyle choice that took courage. I was 36 years old. The film was funded entirely by me on my credit card, and at times I had little support and was in a male dominated industry. I would say that it’s rare also to have a film made about you at the age of 16, and that there are few surfers featured in magazines that are like Oney Anwar .”
She hopes the movie sheds light on what it’s like for anyone to chase their dreams. This project became Karen’s passion after meeting Director Jason Moon and witnessing life on the edge of a jungle, in Oneys home village of Lakey Peak, Sumbawa.
“Chasing The Dream” will be premiering at the “Approaching Lines Festival” on Saturday afternoon, March 21, 2015 (5:30 pm).
This screening is hosted in association with Newquay BID, and is a ‘Grommets go Free’ event. Accompanied children under 16’s get in free at the Lighthouse Cinema Venue, Newquay, Cornwall.
