15 – 18th May 2015 :: Bali, Indonesia
Let’s Make Waves :: Using the unifying power of surfing to connect and bring about positive impact globally.
The world’s first global Surf+ Social Good Summit aims to bring together a diverse group of people from surf industry, business, academia, civil society, and non-profit to collaborate on best practices, identify challenges and opportunities for surfing as a force for social good, and to enact our collective vision for a better future.
Surfing is more than just a sport – it is a unifying force, an unwavering equalizer and a tool for empowerment. Over years of work through our socially-driven surf organizations, Waves of Freedom, A Liquid Future, Beyond the Surface International, Little Seeds Surf Coaching and Salt Gypsy, we are collaborating to host the Surf + Social Good Summit this May in Bali, Indonesia. We have seen the impact that surfing can have on empowering individuals (particularly young women and girls) and local and global communities.
The S+SG Summit is truly the launch of a movement. This is not a conventional conference. We’re into breaking down barriers and fostering an ecosystem for connection, collaboration and collective leadership for greater impact. Our goal is to create the spark that fuels a global awakening for coordinated, innovative social development.
The Summit is now open for registration; spaces are very limited so book now!
A three-stage event :: Connection – Action – Impact
Connection
The event opens on the evening of Friday 15th May with an address from the Summit team and offers the opportunity for participants to connect. On the 16th, we will share knowledge, ideas, practices and experiences, develop beneficial partnerships and new ways of effecting change through collaboration and collective action. A series of forum sessions with guest speakers and facilitated small group workshops centred around core aspects of ‘social good’ such as: empowerment, community development, conflict resolution, and sustainability, will enable participants to explore and address how we innovate to leverage surfing as a tool for positive impact.
Action
A special part of the Surf + Social Good Summit is our Action Day. In celebration of Women’s International Surfing Month and recognition of the positive impact surfing and the ocean can give to women, this year we will address gender engagement and women’s empowerment through surfing with our ‘Girls Make Waves’ day on Sunday 17th May.
Impact
Delivering breakthrough impact is our goal. On the 18th the Summit hosts a research networking workshop with the aim to develop and deliver transdisciplinary research projects that are directly relevant to the needs and priorities identified at the Summit.
“Once you get in the water, the rules and norms of society dissolve and the power of the ocean to connect and spread happiness is huge.”
~ Easkey Britton, Pro Surfer, Activist, Oxfam Hero, Co-founder of Waves of Freedom.
Call-to-Action
Girls Make Waves Action Day, May 17th
In celebration of May as Women’s International Surfing month and recognition of the unique and positive impact surfing can give to women and girls, we are dedicating a full day of the 3-day Summit to celebrating the achievements and addressing the challenges for surf as force for women and girls globally. This special event focuses on how access to and the experience of surfing can promote self-empowerment for women and girls.
The aim of the GMW Day is to create a series of engaging workshops and surf lessons led by a diverse mix of inspiring local and international female leaders and surf-stars. We explore how we stay connected, share experiences, learn from each other and grow a community of surfing for positive change and we aim to help empower local female surfers to become empowered leaders and change-makers within their communities and beyond.
Support our Crowdrise fundraiser and help give female surfers from developing countries the opportunity to attend this event, and ultimately, create a Girls Make Waves platform – a global online and offline community to promote, encourage and support female leadership through surfing; https://www.crowdrise.com/surfingforsocialgood/
We want you to be a part of this movement. Together, we can make this happen!
